Peculiar Book For Peculiar Topic

Deciding on a book to read isn’t always easy.

The journey through children’s literature is one fraught with the mystical and the too real. From the magical adventures of Harry Potter to the all too real drama of losing a friend in Bridge to Terabithia, there is something for everyone. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children offers a mix of both modern fantasy and a realistic approach to grief. How did the author, Ransom Riggs create such a vivid world and a story that while fantastical still tugs at the heart strings? It is all in the plot, but should this be taught in schools? That will be examined later. As will how Peculiar Children fits into the definition of children’s literature.

Making a decision about what to read is never an easy decision. There are books that are for pure enjoyment and then there are books that have to be read for class/work/some other obligatory reason. Very seldom does reading material fall into both camps. This particular book was one that I had wanted to read for quite some time but never quite found the time to curl up with it. That changed when forced to confront this assignment though and that is a good thing. There was enough time to read as though it were for pleasure and to contemplate it as though it were an assignment.

When deciding on a book for this piece, there was a process. The newest Fear Street was the original pick and was actually read. It wasn’t until it was time to start putting together the project that it became clear that it was not the right book to present. Instead, Ransom Riggs and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children screamed to not only be read but also analyzed on a more critical level.

As a reader, the text did nothing to change the way that things are seen. However, as a student and a writer, it certainly opened doors for the imagination to come in and see things in a different light. The photographs that inspired the story is something that seems obvious but eluded some to a degree that is embarrassing and very questionable. Ransom Riggs had the foresight and thought to put together a book that was inspired by photographs that he found.
