What drives us to ignore old games on new consoles?
The PlayStation 5 is in my crosshairs. I want to pull the trigger but a few things are holding me back. Among them are the lack of a 4K TV, appropriate justification for how many hours per day I spend gaming, and the idea that games on my shelf will just not get played once I upgrade.
Many PlayStation 4 games have found a new life on the PS5. I know that I can take Tony Hawk, God of War, and a few others along for the ride. I know this, but I also know history. I was able to play PlayStation games on the PS2. I was also able to play PlayStation and PS2 games on the PS3, but did I?
Not really. It's similar to owning a printer with a scanner. You know it's there, yet you will rarely end up using it. It is an add-on that serves a purpose but what you really care about is the new and the exciting things on offer.
For all of my previous upgrades, I have dabbled with the old. I have told myself that I am upgrading the hardware only and need to justify the cost. This is done by completing all those previously purchased games, yet in reality, it rarely happens.
Metal Gear Solid is my favourite game of all time, yet I know that I would rather play Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart than start Metal Gear Solid 5 (no idea if it is compatible, just an example). Why? It's new and exciting, it pushes the hardware and it is topical.
There will be some who have all the time in the world and will play the old games on the new. To them, I tip my hat. Whether through age, work, or socialising, time to play games continues to fall further by the wayside as each year passes. I want to play them but without sounding like a brag, I don't have as much time as I used to.
