Five Things

Here is the prompt:

Going into my eleventh day of self-imposed isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, I am inspired to find new ideas to write about. So here are five things around my house that mean a lot to me:

My photo

This first item is a tribal mask made in Kenya by the local Maasai. I bought it as I was walking through a gift shop that was the always the exit from the rest rooms. This became a habit throughout our 12 day safari in 2012. It got to the point where my sons were threatening to not let me drink any more water so I wouldn’t have to pee since it always lead to shopping.

Item number 2 is a “worry doll” my son made for me in kindergarten. You are supposed to tell these dolls all of your worries and then they are supposed to go away. I can’t say this has worked, but it does feel good to have someone to listen in times of stress.

My photo

Item number 3 is an original sketch of Waverly. I rode Waverly until he retired in 2016. We had a special bond and we won several first place ribbons in horse shows. I bought the sketch at a gala fundraiser for the adaptive riding facility where I’ve been riding horses since 2000. I attended the gala with a man I started dating after my divorce. I loved him deeply. He died due to his alcoholism a year after we broke up.

I’m not exactly sure what item number 4 is. My Aunt Arlyne gave it to me on one occasion when she said to choose anything I wanted from her house to take home. I would often pick something and she would say “You can’t have that.” This was a jingly jangly thing she picked up somewhere in her vast travels.

Item number 5 is a framed travel poster a dear friend gave me for my 50th birthday. He is a junk dealer and knows I collect “cheap souvenirs” from around the world and have a love of Africa.

I look forward to seeing items from around your house that mean a lot to you and reading their stories.

Thank you for reading. :)
