How to Use The Power of Silence to Win More Friends

No one likes attention whores.

I walked onto my school’s theater stage. I wore shorts, had two Sesame street dolls in my hands, and a huge bandanna wrapped around my waist.

As I sat down in the chair waiting for the music to start, I could hear my “friends” chuckling in the background. Everyone in the crowd stared at me in suspense.

Play “Wake Me Up Inside” by Evanescence.

Commence the embarrassment.

I danced around with my eyes closed. I looked like a T-Rex on crack. I threw my Sesame street dolls everywhere, picked them up again, and continued to make a fool out of myself. Everyone in the crowd laughed in agony.

And the worst part?

I didn’t win the talent show.

That’s why being an attention whore is the worst route you can take to get more friends.

I’m an introverted person.

Unsurprisingly, I never made many friends. I often sat at the lunch table by myself. Most people never spoke to me. I had to seek out other people to play with during recess.

I had an “aha” moment in middle school when I said a funny joke in class. Everyone laughed at me. I noticed people would talk to me after I made witty remarks. So I appointed myself as the minstrel show.

I shed my introverted shell and set my sights on being a popular kid.

Soon enough, the crowd of friends poured in. People wanted to speak to me. People wanted to sit with me. People gave me attention. That’s all I ever wanted, but of course, it backfired on me as I grew older.

I did the minstrel show for about four years until I got bored of it.

The funny thing about embarrassing yourself in front of people is that it’s funny at the moment. People don’t care about you. They care about the stupid shit you’ll do next. Everything is about the next joke or antic.
