Large Corperations and Climate Change

While the world is heating up as we know it, life is still going on. People need food, clothes, water, transportation, and let’s face it. In this day and age, we’re all about consumerism. We love buying new things, and as long as we keep up the demand, businesses will still churn out products to satisfy the demand. Many people blame business practices for our global crisis. If they are to blame, perhaps getting businesses to “go green” is a major key in reducing emissions and helping the climate.

What are businesses doing?

One shocking company for many is Walmart. They’ve made great strides like launching a long-term program to use 100% renewable energy sources to power their stores. They use wind turbines to power fluorescent lighting. Their heating systems burn recovered cooking oil from the deli fryer, and motor oil from the Tire and Lube Express centers. As far as stores go, Walmart is ahead of game.

Other companies like Dell rolled out a program to trade in your old electronics for them to dispose of safely, Brooks made biodegradable running shoes, and Coca-Cola made 100% recyclable bottle.

While these are all great efforts, there is still more work to be done. Reducing waste and recycling is amazing, but the production effort still lets off emissions that warm our atmosphere. Although there are environmental laws in place to fine companies if their emissions go above the allocated amount, this isn’t enough, as agreed upon by Dinesh, Minhaj, and Rakesh (2018)

He comments that many MNCs responsible for degrading environment, prefer to pay taxes rather than changing their manufacturing techniques. It is unfortunate that in context to developing countries like India, in the name of globalization, employment opportunities and tax collection by the Governments; often the issues like environmental risks, rising pollution levels, use of toxic chemicals banned in developed countries, are kept hidden, underplayed and rarely discussed.

Although not just in India, it would be much easier and less costly for most multi-national corporations to just pay fines rather than rework the ways of their business. Why bother when it’s cheaper to just pay? Perhaps the only way for large corporations to care is not only have them pay, but make it entirely illegal for these kind of emissions to be let off at such a high rate. It may cost extra at first, but going green could be better for everyone all around.
