The Invasion Begins

What the hell is that?! King braked to a halt, so he wouldn’t smash into the car in front of him, which was also stopping.

One hundred feet in front of King’s small black motor scooter, a huge monster blocked the highway. King sure didn’t want to get close enough to measure the thing, but he reckoned it must be at least thirty feet tall and eighty feet long. It had greyish-green skin and a body like a sauropod dinosaur, but its head and feet resembled a crocodile’s, with a long toothy snout, and long sharp claws. On the creature’s back was a large basket-like platform full of things. King didn’t know what else to call them — they didn’t look like anything he’d ever seen before. Each was about seven feet tall, and hugely muscled, with human-like bodies, hands and feet, covered by pale-grey skin. The heads were a bizarre collage of features from unrelated animals: the lower half of the face was a long wolf-like muzzle covered in short grey fur, with the lower jaw stronger, thicker and longer than the top, with two tusks protruding from the end of it, past the velvety black nose. The upper half of the face was reptilian, covered in dark green scales, but the eyes were large, brown, and bulbous, like a horse’s, and the ears were long, pink, leaf-shaped, and able to twitch in all directions, like a pig’s. The things wore tarnished and dented armour, that looked like it had been scavenged from various sources, rather than fashioned to fit the wearer, and were carrying crossbows.

The dinosaur-thing had created a ten car pile-up in front of King. There were five wrecked cars blocking each half of the dual-carriageway. The carnage in the right lane was similar to that in the left lane, which King was in. The entire front half of the front car in that lane had been flattened against the back half like a tightly-squeezed accordion. It rested against the left front leg of the dinosaur-thing as if it had run into the leg with tremendous force. King shuddered to think what might have happened to the driver. The back half of the front car had almost been squashed to oblivion, too, as the car behind it had ploughed into at high speed, and then another three cars had smashed into the second car; then the driver in front of King had slammed on his brakes just in time to avoid ramming the fifth car.
