Improve Communication in Group Work

Looking back on what happened these days, I feel my ability to communicate is improved. I see group chat as something that will train my communication skills and improve my ability to communicate.

For class MGS 351, we have a team project proposal due in Friday and we met this Tuesday afternoon to discuss it. In the morning of Tuesday, I am quite anxious to do that because I don`t like group meeting, especially with whom I am not familiar with. Talking and listening in person makes me uncomfortable. Nevertheless, I have to attend lots of group meeting this semester, information system class, the marketing class, accounting class… Almost every class has a group project, which makes me crazy.

Analyzing the reasons may be helpful for me to overcome the averseness of the group talking. Firstly, I can hardly get the points of my group members. I feel hard to focus on their words once I have some different ideas. Secondly, some members don`t really listen. Lastly, not all group meeting are efficient, which sometimes gives me a feeling of wasting time.

Dr. Kay enforced the importance of using the correct pace and priority in communication. Pace means the speed of talking. Faster-paced communicators talk a lot and relatively, slowed-paced one prefer to listen than talk. Priority means the orientation of the talk. People-oriented communication focuses on events and people, while task oriented one pay attention to results and data. I found this research is interesting that conclude all types of communicators — faster-paced with back wheel, faster-paced with front wheel, faster-paced and front wheel, and slower-paced with front wheel. These also apply to listeners. Therefore, in order to make others really listen your ideas, analyze the team members` communication type first, and then organize the language in facts and visions. Another question is how to focus on others` talking. Kay said that a conversation is only a success when it is a true exchange of ideas — a give and takes. I need to change my attitude first. Calm down, listen carefully, and give feedback definitely makes the communication more harmonious.
