Stop Following Everyone on Social Media

When I was young, my friends and I would always ask one another hypothetical questions.

If you can teleport anywhere around the world, where would you go?

If you can travel back in time, who would you want to meet?

If you get a chance to change gender, would you opt to change?

If you have a superpower, what would it be?

If I had a superpower, I would like to read other people’s minds. That was my answer back in the 90s. Today, you don’t need to be a superhero to have this power.

We can now read everyone’s thoughts — they’re all over social media. And it’s not as enticing as I thought it would be.

We are not hardwired to process this kind of information.

You’ve been through it — scrolling down newsfeed infinity, and you question yourself on who these people are. I don’t even know half of them. Even with those people whom I know, they’re too much of a different person for me to care. I even have high school batchmates that I didn’t have a conversation with before.

So I began decluttering my feed and started unfollowing everyone. It became so tedious that I just removed everything. I started from scratch and built my way up to a sizeable amount of people whom I want to follow.

I started with my family, relatives and then close friends. Acquaintances were where the problem originates. I have too much of them, and I had to vet if they were worth my time or not.

I recommend you start from zero and work your way up. Follow your digital mentors — people who inspire you to do better work every day. And then follow the acquaintances who you can collaborate with. I recommend unfollowing the elementary or high school friend who you didn’t even talk to before.

You are not required to follow everyone. Your attention is valued at a higher price and don’t let anyone take it away from you. Guard it as if you’re guarding your money.
