Best friends turned mentalist duo

Tessa and Jeff Evason’s “lifelong journey”

By Nicole Del Rosario

The chattering crowd grew louder as Tessa Evason, clad in shimmery clothing guessed yet another stranger’s full name correctly. “Who is skeptical right now?” Jeff Evason, her husband and performance partner, asked as dozens of hands immediately shot up, a bewildered expression on each individual’s face.

When asked if she would reveal what her tricks were, Tessa Evason said she would rather keep it a secret.

“You’re in awe and that’s where I want you to be,” she said.

While performing, she closes her eyes, turns around, and predicts information about random audience members. From someone’s phone number to their zodiac sign, she can guess it all.

The couple’s story starts in 1983 when he was a radio broadcaster and she was fashion model in Toronto. They met at a fashion show Tessa was a part of and quickly became best friends.

“What we experienced was a soul mate connection. It just became stronger the longer we were together,” Tessa explained.

The “soul mate connection” they experienced turned into an award-winning act that gained them notoriety. Though they have different dynamics, the two put their talents together and created a spectacle.

Their acts have been broadcasted on several major television networks such as NBC, FOX, and Discovery Channel. They also showcased their talent among the likes of Penn and Teller on their show, Penn and Teller: Fool Us.

Tessa Evason discovered her talent at an early age when she still lived in the Caribbean, but she thought nothing of it until she met her husband.

“I didn’t understand why Jeff was so surprised. Because in my mind, it’s something that a lot more people have experienced,” she explained.

The first magic trick Jeff Evason saw from his wife was a simple guessing game, which he claimed still blew him away. People would put a ring in their hand and she would always know which hand it was in.

“When she told me what her trick was, it was amazing, but anyone can do it,” Jeff Evason said.

Jeff Evason explained that what his wife does has taken time and practice. He refers to it as a “life journey” and says that they are still growing and learning after all these years.

Lancer Productions, the student programming board at Longwood, brought the mentalist duo to perform on campus. Emily Kratzer, Traditions Director of LP, said she enjoyed herself and laughed along with the audience members.

“Each thing they do gets more and more surprising and you get more and more into it. It really draws you into the show,” Kratzer stated.

The mentalist duo claim that nothing is prearranged and there are no gimmicks or secret cameras anywhere. Tessa does not even consider herself a psychic.

“People really need to believe in the power of their mind and believe in the dreams they have because they’ll have an amazing fulfilling life,” she said.
