A Writing Habit That Will Last

I used to be crippled by perfectionism. When I sit down to write now, the words just flow. It was easier than I ever imagined. I think I’ve finally created a writing habit that will last. I am…

The War On Climate Crisis

The globe is already experiencing the mild effects of climate change. The issue of climate change seemed like a story some few years ago but now it is not a story no more, it is happening. Maybe it has happened faster than expected but already its impact is being felt in Europe, Africa and other parts of the globe. It is an impromptu disaster to some but the environmental and climate scientists had already predicted its occurrence some few years back.

Some years back the weather pattern was predictable and even weather forecasters could easily predict the weather for a whole month and it came to be correct until currently where even weather forecasters are not reliable because the climate has become unpredictable. The climate is changing. Due to this, it has affected a number of activities. Agricultural activities, fishing, aviation are some of the myriad epitomes of activities that have been affected by the change in climate.

Lately, local and international media houses have been reporting about the climate change frequently than before. The news is everywhere and is now evident in everyone’s eyeballs that climate crisis is happening and the world is already living it.

Compound extremes

The effects of climate crisis have already commenced in a number of parts in the European region and in Africa. Wildfires, drought, famine, hurricane, flooding are some of the mild effects of climate change that is being witnessed across the globe.

There are myriad factors contributing to the fast occurrence of climate crisis. The climate report released by IPCC explained everything.

Excess carbon emission due to the usage of fossil fuels is one of the main factors that have catalyzed the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which has contributed to massive global warming. Factories are operated with fossil fuels, which emit carbon dioxide; gas cars release nitrogen gases, which pollute the atmosphere. Despite the auto-motor industry idea of revolution into zero emission electric cars there is still a number of gas cars, which still emit gases to the atmosphere.

Compound efforts.

A number of famous climate activists and Nobel laureates have joined the war against climate crisis and are calling for a faster action on climate to reduce the mild disaster that countries across the globe are witnessing, to protect humankind and the planet earth, which we live in. On social media, there are forums and groups that have been formed to call for action on climate and to educate the global community about climate emergency and how to reduce its impact.

Swedish Nobel laureate and environmental activist Greta Thunberg has been on the forefront calling for climate action. Other climate scientists such as Michael E. Mann, Vanessa Nakate, Prof. Katharine Hayhoe, and Peter Kalmus are some of the myriad epitomes who have been campaigning for climate action. They are holding campaigns across the internet community and explaining to the global community, what climate emergency means and the need for urgent climate action.

On Twitter, hashtags such as #ClimateChange #ClimateEmergency #ClimateAction used to spread the message about the climate change events that is occurring across the globe.

The social media agora has been a famous means to spread the message of climate change, since myriad people globally have social media accounts this makes it easier to connect with people and raise awareness.

Code red for humanity

The IPCC released a report named “code red” and it explained everything about the current climate crisis the globe is witnessing. It explains the cause of the climate change, findings and steps to mitigate the effects. The UN climate report says global average temperature rise could reach or exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next twenty years, which is ten years sooner than expected. It will lead to widespread unprecedented and extreme weather.

The report also calls for a net zero carbon dioxide emission by 2050. The report released findings that, the past five years have been hottest on record since 1850 while heatwaves have become more intense since the 1950, while cold events have become less frequent and less severe.

If global warming increases, some compound extremes events with low likelihood in past and current climate will become more rampant, and there will be a higher likelihoods that events with increased intensities, durations and/or spatial extents unprecedented in the observational record will occur

The report says it is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land. Environmental and climate scientists called the IPCC report an urgent wake-up call for climate action.

The IPCC report came at a significant time where the world is already experiencing climate change, is not a story no more.

A wake-up call

It is evident that human activities are the major contributors of climate crisis and it is unequivocal and undebatable. The fact remains that the world is not the way it used to be ten year ago, a lot has changed and industrialization has revolutionized the world.

I believe that there is time for climate action and that the time is now to recalibrate and reform our planet earth and save humankind from extremist weather conditions before they become exacerbate in the future.

Climate and environmental scientists are already campaigning and calling for climate action by giving out ways and steps by which the climate change can be mitigated. The world leaders should listen to them and work jointly to save this planet not only for the current gen but also for the future gen.

Industries such as motor have begun a revolution, gas cars are being replaced with electric vehicles, which have zero emission and are eco-friendly. This is a huge step in controlling the emission of gases into the atmosphere. Within five years, the motor industry will be fully electric and gas cars will become extinct.

The next step is to replace fossil fuels, which are the major emitters of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

If greenhouse gas emission can be reduced to net zero carbon dioxide emission by 2050, then global warming can be kept below 2 degrees. This is one finding of the IPCC report, which is controversial. Can we wait until 2050? I think we are already living the climate crisis and there is more need for further climate action call, what is left is introduction of policies now, not in the future. This is what climate scientists have been calling for, saying 2050 is like a “procrastination”

Bottom line, it is evident that the world is already paying the price for ignoring climate scientists warning on climate change, the cost is huge. However, the world is not doomed, there is time to act and save our planet if we reduce and cut emissions drastically.

Time to recalibrate and act on climate change.
