Teenage Nostalgia and Beatlemania

Recovering from surgery involved activities different from my usual routine. One of these pastimes was endlessly scrolling through Facebook and reviving old memories.

Part of my recovery from surgery is doing almost nothing, and participating in activities I would not admit to normally. One of these pastimes is endlessly scrolling through Facebook.

A meme of infamous Republican Congressman George Santos with the Beatles — Santos replacing George Harrison in the picture — made me smile, and brought back a teenage memory.

My girlfriends and I — four of us — stand on the Long Island Railroad platform eagerly awaiting a train that will transport us to the most exciting event of our lives up to that time. We were 15 years old and going to the first ever outdoor stadium rock concert. The Beatles had landed. We were on our way to see the Fab Four at Shea Stadium!

The train was packed with teenagers — overwhelmingly girls. A special train had been allocated for this particular event.

Tickets for this momentous occasion cost $5.65.

I was hooked when the Beatles began their second U.S. tour in 1965.

I admit I do not remember much of the concert. The stadium was packed with 55,000 bodies, mainly maniacal teenage girls. I don’t know how far away we were, but the stage in the middle of the ball field appeared minuscule. My most vivid memory is standing, rocking back and forth, singing? screaming? Was I moving to the music or shoved about by the crowd around me?

I doubt I actually heard the music. The crowd’s screams drowned out the performers. However…
