Get hired without a resume

Let me set the context first. I am only talking about hiring programmers and software engineers here.

Imagine a world where you do not need a resume for getting hired. Wouldn’t that be great ! As a programmer you want to be judged only by your skills and not worry about what your resume says. Because tech skills, especially for a programmer can not be distilled in a resume that is often a single or two pages.

Your skills should get your hired and not your resume.

It is easier said than done though. Recruiters are still stuck in the old mindset of matching key words in the resume to the job description. This also means candidates are not only put off when they do not get even a phone interview call, but most end up ‘tailoring’ the resume as per requirements.

Changing mindset across the industry is difficult, but there are signs that things could change.

Coding challenges:

Coding tests are a relatively new entrant to the field of tech recruitment. Most companies now assess a candidate using at least one coding test or assignment. Coding tests, that virtually did not exist a decade ago are now very common. This already means the resume has lost its value in the recruitment process.

The real question is, could we do away with the resume altogether ?

The answer, is a big resounding YES ! At least that is what we at interviewparrot like to believe,

We believe in skills-based hiring. At its simplest form, it is simply a number, say between 1 to 10 that a candidate is assigned based on their performance in various assessments. A recruiter then makes a decision based on this number.

Here are a few reasons why I think resume-less hiring is the future:

Bias free hiring

There is a lot of push toward removing bias from the interview process already, which is a good thing. We would like to see companies trying to remove this bias altogether right from the initial screening process. And removing the resume is a big step. If a recruiter can not see personal details like name, age, sex, city, past experience, degree etc they are unlikely to have a bias — conscious or unconscious on the selection process.

Consistent hiring

A skills based hiring model, in principle, allows for a consistent hiring process for a company. Companies still need to make sure they are testing for the right skills for the right roles, something that they do already. However, the dependency on the person doing the screening is reduced as it now depends on the process and not on a person.

Hire better candidates

Candidates who have performed well in these skills tests would be better hires, compared to those with sparkling resumes. At least that is what the promise is. The challenge, obviously is to create the right assessment test.

Are we saying, recruiters are not required at all ?

No. Recruiters serve an important role in hiring, and they will continue to do so.

For example, companies using a skills based hiring process would still be interviewing candidates onsite, but would save time and be more efficient in that first screening step.

Are you an employer ?

You should hire the people with the best skills and not the best resume.
