How to Trust Your Own Ability

I remember saying to someone in the last month or so, “There’s very little I enjoy more in life than watching Stephen Curry highlights”. All makes, no misses. If you don’t know, look him up.

Due to the sheer volume of shots this once in a generation player takes, the highlight reel is long — and due to the obstacles he has to overcome, namely Steph’s small stature and always being matched up with the opposition’s best (if not two best) defenders — the plays are more often than not, spectacular. Athletic, dynamic, creative, beautiful.

With my feet up in anticipation, the full-game I was to watch a few days back was the game in which Curry would eclipse 3000 career 3-pt shots made, well clear of anyone else in history.

Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. My boy started the game 0/7 from deep! Maybe my watching the game had somehow cursed him?

You don’t become the greatest shooter of all time however, by letting obstacles get in your way. He kept shooting and when you trust your ability, good things happen. Needless to say, Steph made his 3000th that game and also made 5 of his next 7 threes on the night.

What enables Steph to trust his ability? Hard work, repetition, failure, doubters. All of these things are fuel for those who know that there is success on the horizon. We just need to keep shooting.
