Whole Bank. A Design thinking excercise.

Whole Bank is a modern financial institution that aims to offer the trust inspiring experiences and reliability of more traditional banks but paying close attention to their clients specific needs and the new technologies available to serve such purpose.

Interviewing people is one of the things that I find to be most rewarding and eye opening if you really know how to conduct yourself and how to properly design a series of questions. One thing to be taking into account is that you should be ready to re-design the questions when a topic that you did not consider before comes up. Work on segues for the possible upcoming answers in order to keep a free flowing type of conversation; that will make the interviewee feel more confortable and maybe give you even more information than expected.

The thing is that in the definition of the problem and then afterwards in the scope of the project exists a paradox. The client states that it’s attempting to break the barrier between their debit/credit card users and the establishments that simply don’t accept that form of pay, but wants us to create a feature that will basically do the part of a debit card. So, until we are able to communicate with the client, we’ll ignore that part.

What the user is looking for is availability, flexibility and top notch security. Our client wants all of that to be implemented in an easy to use feature that will make them stand above of their competition and eventually increase their market.

I took the NFC’s route. NFC isn’t really a new technology but it’s one that has been taking relevance in the past few years. The biggest tech companies (such as Samsung and Apple) had adopted it when implementing their respective payment mechanisms. The support shown by this tech juggernauts, along with their security characteristics, will help us overcome the push back from the users when it comes to adapting to a new form of paying and present us the opportunity to explore new avenues in not so explored fields. In addition to that, and here’s what will make us stand out, we’ll offer the user the option to use any type of currency at his disposal. Creating what could be called as an e-card, wether it contains cryptocurrency or traditional money, we’ll give people the chance to pay for whatever they want, wherever they are and whenever they like.

First drafts suck. It’s important that once you “finished” prototyping you go through each and every screen in order to find missing pieces or some necessary features that you didn’t think of at first. Sketching is a muscle, it demands consistency and true dedication.
