My Transition into Improved Writing

Before this semester even started I was nervous I was going to have a repeat of last semesters english class. I came to college with the wrong mindset about writing which turned out being my biggest weakness. My first semester I was so used to high school writing and thought I was very good at writing but my report card said otherwise. I failed english my first semester because I would overlook work and did not take it seriously which made me lose motivation to try and become better. I remember my Success Coach calling me over December break to tell me it would be best if I took English again and I was unsure. I still had no motivation and thought I was just going to fail again but my parents helped me realize this was for the best. I quickly realized I needed to change in my writing, and ended up being happy I took the opportunity. I went from failing english first semester to learning the essential steps and strategies to become a writer that is happy with their work.

“I became so comfortable with my writing in high school that I had never actually took the time to try and improve my writing and get ready for the college level.” (Writer’s Blog #1) When I wrote this I still was not entirely motivated that I was going to do good and honestly was still not ready for college writing. Writer’s Blog #1 was the first work I submitted for class and I was happy when I wrote it but looking back it was nothing special. “This also shows that writing is not always just for a grade and that it can make people feel a certain way and carry some heavy emotions with it so it’s good to always be improving your writing skills.” If I were to rewrite this blog I would change this into two sentences because it seems too much like a run on sentence. I do not personally like this piece after reviewing it, but remembering it as the first assignment I handed in this year it is definitely interesting to see how far I have come.

Over the course of this semester I have learned a lot more than last semester. One of the more important concepts of invention I learned was to write about something you’re passionate about because it helps with motivation. With information literacy I learned how to effectively present my information in my writing while making it flow. Reflection taught me why it’s important to look back at my work and decisions from before and learn from my mistakes to make me better. I have improved my research skills and learned how to how to actually analyze a reading and retain information. Peer-editing has helped me with revision a lot, I used to never revise my work now I will when I have time and before I hand in an assignment. Analyzing the right way has greatly improved my writing and showed me how to use rhetorical appeals within my writing.

This semester has been such an improvement for me compared to last semester and I could not be happier with the progress of my work. It was a great start into becoming a better student learning the effective strategies to write properly. I can now confidently say I am happy with my writing again.
