The best qualities of writing create the best pieces.

It may be difficult trying to hook the audience you’re writing for unless you apply the most important qualities of writing.

From looking at the adjectives our class used to describe the articles they read, it’s clear that we believe in writing that is concise, straight forward and to the point. Getting to the point of your writing and stating the main argument is the most important part. I would also agree with this. Beating around the bush sends readers’ minds elsewhere and it can be quite hard to read if they do not understand what or why they’re reading an article.

I saw that the 6th and 7th qualities of powerful writing were most evident in the article I chose to read. Number 6 states that “powerful writing is well-suited for its audience”. Good writers understand what beliefs their audience share. That’s why the author of this article was honest when it came to describing the things we care about. He engaged his readers by connecting with them and admitting he shares similar emotion in different situations. He knows that this writing style will hold his audience’s interest.

The 7th quality of powerful writing states that powerful writing is compelling. In this case, the author of this article demanded attention through the strength of its language and dialogue. Readers feel immediately connected to the author and his words. For example, the second paragraph, titled “They’re Only Human”, immediately grabs the readers attention as the author talks directly to them. He starts it off by saying, “And you are too. Real people don’t care about what you want them to care about, they are real and bullshit just as much as me and you”. Here, the author is engaging his audience through a direct connection, which helps keep readers interested.
