The Danger of Casual Hatred

I watched an interview once with a woman who was studying sexual harassment in the workplace. At the end of the session, there was a Q and A and one question that was put to her was, “How can men know if something they said would constitute sexual harassment?” She said that if there is any question in your mind then just don’t say it.

Imagine that. Asking someone to use a little propriety and consciousness when interacting with others. What a concept.

Misogyny, racism, and ageism (which I include because it can be as harmful as other sorts of prejudice) are endemic in our society. So ingrained that if you were to point out that something someone said was racist or sexist they would look at you like you had just slapped them in the face.

I believe that as our need to lash out is fostered by the anonymity of the internet. People who got used to being able to say whatever they want will be less likely to develop a sense of what should and should not be said in actual conversations.

Misogynistic and sexist comments are so much a part of everyday talk now that it is getting hard to call out all the examples. Depending on the person it seems that a lot of these comments are based on a desire to place blame.

There is the belief, among people that I have talked to, that women are the cause of all our problems because they keep having babies, or they don’t want to date you, or they drive big cars, or they don’t need your help, or they just want to be left alone.
