Success Through Failure

Orville and Wilbur Wright are famous for their invention of the airplane. In the book The Wright Brothers by David McCullough, he tells the story of their lives and their adventures with their experiments. From a certain section of the book the author discusses their time when they were inventing the flying machine. Wilbur during this time went to give a speech for the Western Society of Engineers in Chicago. Wilbur was extremely nervous about giving this speech, and felt that he did not even have time to truly prepare for it. Even after the death of President McKinley, Wilbur kept working towards his speech. The speech, “Some Aeronautical Experiments”, became a very famous speech for years to come. The speech went on to be published in the first scientific journal.

Even through hard times the brothers continued to work towards their flying machine.

The brothers worked every day towards their glidered, documenting every step of the process. Kitty Hawk was greatly affected by the Wright brothers. The citizens of Kitty Hawk loved the Wright brothers as well. By October 28, their third machine made it at Kill Devil Hills. Now it was time to build a motor.

In December 1903, they began working on a motor for the flying machine.

The brothers applied for a patent for their flying machine, its wing-warping system, and rudder on March 23.

Although, their invention had made great progress is still was not as successful as they wanted it to be. The machine kept failing the Langley test flight. The brothers kept record again of a day-by-day progress on the Flyer.

On November 2nd, they began to place their engine on the machine.

Try after try the Wright Brothers had failed flight attempts. They did not give up though, and eventually they flew their flight against twenty on mile wind with an average speed of thirty one miles longest 59 seconds.

After their success their flyer was put into storage at Dayton, and never flown again.

The Wright Brothers faced so many obstacles and failures, however they never gave up. Through all of the times that they failed and all the different obstacles they faced, it never stopped them. People are so quick to give up on their inventions and their ideas if they see the slightest sign of failure. However, you cannot acheive full success until you push through and complete you invention.

The Wright Brothers teach society that if you work towards something every day, that you will achieve your end goal. You cannot given up when things get hard. Thats when you push the hardest towards your goal.

“We had to go ahead and discover everything ourselves” — Orville Wright
